Pass the Butter . . . and no I’m not talking about Last Tango!

Since I’ve been so distraught over the closure of my food source Rawsome, I’ve begun to take the lead from my resourceful friend Sandy Hill and make my own butter and buttermilk. It turns out that this is a really fun activity that the whole family can participate in. I buy the raw cream at the Coop Store in Santa Monica or Farmers Market, and then pour it into a mason jar. All we do then is vigorously shake the jar for about 45 minutes. You could throw it in the blender, but there is something satisfying about making it the old fashioned way. This last week my daughters had friends over so we would all pass the jar around and give it a good shake for about ten minutes each. I just loved the moment when the middle part of the jar would solidify with butter and the buttermilk would separate. The homemade butter tasted so creamy and rich.
