Blessings from The Sunrise Shells

July 6, 2011 | 1 Comment

Once worn by Hawaiian royalty these gorgeous rare shells can only be found on the North shore of Oahu and on Kauai.  They are a type of deep water scallop and live at the depths of the sea. When a few get washed up they are usually spotted at sunrise hence the name. It could also be derived from the gorgeous colored hue of the shells that resemble the morning sun. I have been searching for one every time I come to the island but it’s becoming more and more rare. They say to find one is a blessing and to wear one shows your love and compassion, otherwise known as your aloha.

A few years ago my beloved (the one that I came without)

bought me some beautiful earrings made by a local girl who sells them at the Hanalei Farmer’s Market. I did meet an interesting journeyman who sells them from his car. He sells them for a good price but they aren’t mounted as a necklace or earrings. His name is Shell Man Steve (808) 212 6247.

The little tiny shells are Niihau shells and when they are sewn together to make the necklaces or earrings the price will be much more. I did find a few of these in the early morning sifting through the sand as I greeted the sun.
