The Art of Giving Books

December 18, 2012 | 5 Comments

I love books! I cannot seem to get behind the whole E book phenomena. I like to hold a book, underline it, smell the ink, feel the pages between my fingers and pass them along to my family and friends. I understand that it isn’t very green but some publishers are coming up with ways to use recycled paper. I not only like to receive a great book but i also like to give them. Here are my favorite ones for this gift giving season.

Kelly Wearstler’s fabulous coffee table book Rhapsody makes a wonderful gift. I am so thrilled to have an interview with the beautiful designer soon!

The latest from famed chef Yotam Ottolenghi  Jerusalem: A Cookbook discovers the melting pot of deliciousness coming from his birth place. The mix of Christian, Jewish and Muslim traditions make  for some incredible recipes.

For Fiction lovers The Dovekeepers will not disappoint. I could not put it down and cried not only because the story was so utterly powerful and moving but because it was ending! Alice Hoffman has taken the true historical accounts of what happened in Masada and woven it into a tapestry of suspense and heartbreaking beauty. The women in this book inspired me tremendously.

On my twenty first birthday my mother got me Christiane Northrup’s book Women’s Bodies, Women’s Wisdom .
Ever since this book has been like a bible of sorts and a helpful resource.

I love the dress you’re wearing in the book photo. Can you tell me about it?

Same with me! i love to feel books between my fingers, i love to hold them, i love to smell them. i love to collect them. i cannot read a book on my laptop. it is not the same process.

We are not alone in our love of books. All my local book stores were packed out this Christmas with people bearing piles of books. I will always love my traditional books. I’m not sure if E-Book publishing is that much greener if you consider all the land fill from discarded kindles and the process involved to make the machine in the first place. It’s the same with magazines. I would always prefer a magazine in my hand to reading on a screen. My mind seems to take it in better and I love the smell of paper etc. Several years ago I vowed to mainly give books as gifts and I firmly believe they do make the loveliest presents.

Thanks! My parents honeymooned in afghanistan and I had a similar dress as a child. I lived in iran and am half turkish so have always had a soft spot for “ethnic”, or indian textiles.
