Elves Fair, Woodland Faire
Fifteen years ago when my daughter Colette was a wee being still wrapped against me in a carrier, I stumbled upon the Autumn Enchantment fair at The Westside Waldorf School in Santa Monica. I had read about Rudolph Steiner a bit, and aware of the school, but it wasn’t until I stepped into the enchanted kingdom of the festival that i became a devoted fan. That evening I saw elves, fairies, gnomes, Japanese fairy tale characters, mermaids, and angels playing harps. They gathered the children told stories, and bestowed upon them crystals, rocks, feathers, and other natural gems in lieu of candy. I began to weep. I felt I had come home. My daughter joined the preschool but eventually we had to change schools. Now years later my youngest is going to the school and staying for the duration. The wonderful thing about the Waldorf tradition and festivals is that there is usually one near you whether you live in upstate New York, or Santa Fe. The Elves Faire s held at the Pasadena Waldorf (thank you Stephanie for the info) which is at the most beautiful old craftsman house. I had many fantasies about living near there so we could attend that school. On December 1st there will be the Woodland Faire for our school in the Pacific Palisades. These are open to the public and wonderful ways in which to spend time with the little ones.
