Exhibit at the Hammer Museum = Oh yes Art!!
At the Hammer Museum right now there is an amazing exhibit by an obscure Polish artist named Alina Szapocznikow called Sculpture Undone . Alina was one of those artists not unlike Frida Kahlo who used their own body to express the pain of battling physical pain. Alina grew up between the Polish ghettos and Nazi concentration camps. She survived Auschwitz and Terezin, but was left infertle from having tuberculosis. At age twenty she began to find solace in art. She started working in bronze moved to stone and marble, but eventually moved to polyester resin. She is thought of as a vanguard in the resin field, and refused to use molds using her own body instead. When discovering she had breast cancer, Alina began her examination of body parts that is both erotic and terrifying. I am so grateful we have museums in our town like the Hammer that take an interest in the obscure and brilliant ones!
