Moon Fairy in Silverlake ☽
I have been addicted to my moon juice for some time now and the best part about it is having a friend in the moon fairy herself Amanda Bacon Chantal. I so admire her for forging the path with keeping her juices 100% organic. There are lots of places popping up that claim to be ‘fresh’ and ‘natural’, but i think there are very few that are actually all organic. During these times when 90% of our crops are doused with chemicals, it is crucial for juices to be all organic otherwise one you will be ingesting a direct line of roundup. The new moon juice shop that’s opened in Silverlake carries all the same elixirs, juices and smoothies as does the venice shop, but now Amanda is also serving incredibly tasty raw cheeses and crackers made from sprouted nuts and seeds. The silver lake shop is light and airy, it’s walls adorned by gorgeous photographs by my favorite Tierney Gearon . Lovely interview with Amanda below!

1) What inspired you to open the Silverlake Moonjuice?
My people, my friends, my tribe, my family over here. I lived on the east side for years before moving to Venice and opening moon juice up on rose ave. I guess I don’t feel like I have ever left. The little moon hubs of health are really aimed at serving the goods to the mouths of the movement. I didn’t target the busiest location in town, but the one that would continue to inspire the passion project, at the end of the day that is truly what satiates me and keeps me working 7 days a week with love in my heart.
2) Do you feel connected to the moon, in what way?
let me count the ways! im going to actually get a little more practical with this version of an answer, I could go off the woo woo deep end right now, but ill keep it neat!
We are conductors living in the active and powerful cosmos, extraordinary and mathematical miracles dancing all around us. As women we are even more sensitive to this magic, I like to use the moon as a lighthouse if you will. It’s a structure that we can align with that lets us wax and wane as we do. The cycle provides windows for manifestation and rest, seas of emotions and clockwork. I like to structure my life according to the moon, I trust the moon.
3) What is your favorite concoction these autumn days?
Raw, autumnal, delights are gracing each of my days. My current favorites are our pumpkin and mulberry overnight oats. I love this for breakfast and as a midnight snack, I can’t quit… I love these raw and sprouted oats because unlike cooked oatmeal they are alkalizing to the system rather than acidic. By spouting the rolled oats and lovingly turning them all night long in pumpkin seed milk the most luxurious and creamy texture is produced, then garnished with white mulberries hydrated in pumpkin seed milk and pumpkin meat dehydrated with cozy spice. Im also swigging the elderberry immunity cup and shooting our cold pressed pomegranate juice with essential oil of black pepper. Haven’t been sick yet!
4) What is your favorite beauty secret?
I am actually putting my favorite beauty secret into a jar, available in the new few weeks. It’s an ancient empiric formulation that I worked on with one of the most renowned herbalists in the country. It’s called Beauty Dust and is a formula of pearl powder, rehmannia, schizandra, and goji. It expands beauty through calming the nerves, increasing collagen and silica production, toning and firming tissue, and both hydrating and fortifying skin, hair, nails, and cell membranes from the inside out.
5) Where do you see yourself in ten years?
Sprawled out on pillows laid upon the deck of a wooden boat looking up into the asteroid belt identifying all of the constellations in the sky. A warm breeze carring the sweetness of the sea, the sound of lapping water, melodies coming out of my dearest friends, and love so strong it bursts out of my chest and manifests into color against the night air. Of course the galley is stocked with green juice, medicinal mushrooms and herbs, raw sprouted treats, tinctures made from petals, telescopes and nautical knot diagrams.
6) You are one of the only few organic juice companies which is why I am addicted. Can you tell us why this is crucial for you?
So crucial! I don’t eat food that isn’t organic. We maintain really strict policies at Moon Juice with organic certifications on everything, from the hard to find specialty ingredients down to green cleaning products we mop the floor with.
In an (organic, unpasteurized) nutshell this is why it’s organic or die:
GMOs and chemical pesticides will hurt and kill you, it’s a fact
Food grown in land stripped by chemicals and pesticides are void of the nutrients and enzymes you’re after in the first place.
The toxins used in conventional farming don’t just get delivered to those that chose to consume them, they pollute our communal environment, poisoning all of us creatures by tainting the earth, water, and air we breath.
We are actually CCOF certified organic now, which is super exciting. Im really proud of the commitment we have made, and hope to see others join clear communication what they are and what they are not. I hope it inspires people to ask questions about organic and opens up a dialog between consumers and the businesses they support. The most powerful vote you can make is with the $20 you spend out on the town. I like to put my money where my heart is and support the products that are 100% organic, don’t need to preach about it all day long, just throw your cash at it!
7) Are you a mermaid or forest fairy?
I think I am coming out of any feelings of association with mermaid hood. I am intrigued and love what mermaids beautifully and mysteriously represent in the feminine. The mermaid was created out of shame, one woman’s shame after accidentally slaying her human lover. The lore is carried out with tales of sailors falling prey to the lure of the siren’s voice, the deadly entanglement with her irresistible locks, and the fatality of surrendering to the illusion of innocence and solace in her bare breasts. I find myself identifying with fairy and sprite energy these days, a human form with magical powers. An alchemist of herbs, green eyed, and while mischievous at times incapable of lies by nature. Those wanting to avoid a fairy encounter in Newfoundland were advised to carry around a piece of bread. Bread allergy, green eyed, playful, and plant loving, I think ive been pegged as fairy!
8) What’s your motto?
As simple and common as it may be I always try to bring everything back to: thank you. I love you.
What a beautiful shop! So light-filled and warm. can’t wait until i’m in town next so that I can try it. The pumpkin porridge sounds delicious! You always find the most amazing places. <3
thank you moon juice and Amanda! We love and support your vision. My little seven year old loves moon juice and asks for it often!
thank you thank you!
Would be so thankful for some of her cracker/raw cheese recipes! everything on that platter looks so yummy!
All organic but WHY plastic?! Plastic is destroying our environment. Being organic and raw is fantastic, but we also need to reduce our waste, not just recycle it.
So lovely! What an inspiration to living with honesty and health. You both are extremly positive female role models. And you iNspire such a classic faShion style. Can we get any tips, and where to find some of the threads/shoes you wore For this interview? Thank-You! Xoxo
Thank you so much Alicia! I have to check with Amanda but my threads were Raquel Alegra skirt, Creatures of Comfort top, and Isabel Marant boots. Blessings x
