Alternative Medicine With Dr. Satish Mohan
About sixteen years ago after I birthed my first daughter, I was perpetually exhausted. I wondered why motherhood seemed so draining to me. I was 26 years old and yet felt so depleted. After visiting a reputable doctor in Beverly Hills, I was diagnosed with an autoimmune condition and told I had about a year to live. I remember vividly thinking to myself that I would prove this doctor wrong. I was blessed to have a good friend recommend Dr. Soram Khalsa, to me and as soon as I met him I knew I would be all right. Dr. Khalsa not only helped me feel better in months, but also inspired me to get on the path of holistic living and medicine. Dr. Khalsa may have a long waiting list these days to get an appointment with, but we live in the mecca of alternative medicine and there are many wonderful practitioners. Of course when it comes to very serious conditions and surgeries Western medicine is the way to go; however, we can take some control and practice preventative care. Perhaps we should adopt the Chinese method to medicine which is pay your doctors to keep you healthy, and if at any time you fall ill you don’t have to pay! I’m sure the medical establishment and pharmaceutical companies will love that idea 🙂
I am so thrilled to have Dr. Satish Mohan contribute to The Local Rose on various subjects each month. Here is discusses the benefits of homeopathy.
People often have the perception that natural medicine works slowly and is not effective for acute conditions. Here is a case from my private practice last month that demonstrates how effective and rapid a well-chosen homeopathic medicine can act. Ross was a 50 yr old male who went to the ER for severe stomach pain and nausea. Ross was diagnosed with acute inflammation of the gallbladder; an ultrasound showed several gallstones present. He was advised to return soon for a surgical removal of his gallbladder. Ross did not have any medical insurance and informed the ER physicians that he could not afford a surgery. The next day, Ross contacted me to find out if there was anything I could do to help him. I did a careful intake of Ross’s symptoms. In homeopathy, we determine what is characteristic and unique about a patients’ symptoms in order to find a remedy that is most similar to those symptoms. Most patients with acutely inflamed gallstones will present with upper right quadrant abdominal pain, abdominal rigidity, and nausea/vomiting. What I found unique about Ross’s presentation was his chilly body temperature, craving for cold drinks, sweets, and bread, easy perspiration, tendency towards constipation, and desire to keep busy in response to an underlying feeling of anxiety. Based on these characteristics, I chose a homeopathic remedy called Calcarea Carbonica, which is a homeopathic preparation made from limestone. I asked Ross to take this medicine in a 30C potency twice that day and to call me tomorrow. The next day, Ross reported that his abdominal pain had improved by 50% and that he no longer felt nauseous. I asked him to continue taking the medicine once a day for the next 3 days. At a 1 week follow-up, Ross reported that his pain was 90% better and his abdomen was no longer rigid. At a 4 week follow-up, Ross had no abdominal pain, significantly less gas and bloating, and reported being able to handle stress better. If Ross were to get a follow-up ultrasound, I anticipate that it would show that his gallstones had been dissolved. This case shows how effective homeopathy can be at treating acute conditions. I’d like to end with a quote from Samuel Hahnemann, the founder of homeopathy: “The highest ideal of cure is the rapid, gentle and permanent restoration of health.”
Sincerely,
Dr Satish Mohan ND
