The Story: The Gift of Eve
The first time I met Eve at her apartment in NYC, she was in the process of giving away all her silver ware and china to a homeless woman she had just met on the corner of 16th street. Eve truly influenced me and taught me why service is a necessity. As a college graduation gift Eve gave me the opportunity of accompanying her to Croatia during the Balkan civil war to help with women refugees who had survived rape camps. I realized quickly on that trip that I wasn’t as hearty as I thought I was. I ended up doing clerical work in the office when Eve would venture to the refugee camps. Years later Eve would travel to Afghanistan, Pakistan, Egypt, Juarez, New Orleans, Haiti, Kenya, Thailand, and the Congo to try to stop violence against women. Her heart now lies with The Congo where she has built an actual city called The City of Joy for the survivors of the brutal rapes. Recently Eve overcame cancer and she now says it was “the gift of cancer”. Eve has taught me to never see bleak moments as they appear, but as opportunities for change and growth. She has shown me that indeed one person can make great changes in the world. She has shown me how art can transform “poison into medicine”. She is one of the most courageous, open hearted beings I’ve ever met. Thank you Eve . . .
