Healthy Gourmet Popcorn and the Benefits of Nutritional Yeast

October 10, 2013 | 8 Comments

healthy popcorn, popcorn with coconut oil

I took a long break from popcorn due to the GMO scare but now that we can find organic, non-GMO popcorn I am so thrilled to get back to making my favorite movie watching snack. I like using Great Northern Organic Yellow Gourmet Popcorn cooked in a pot with Artisana 100% Organic Raw Coconut Oil Extra Virgin . My new favorite discovery is using nutritional yeast and sea salt to flavor the popcorn. It is so delicious and healthy! My favorite yeast so far is Rawmesan Herb -n- Spice flavor. I finish up the popcorn with some pink Himalayan sea salt and then watch out! You won’t be able to stop yourself from eating the whole bowl!

Benefits of Nutritional Yeast

I was always wary of eating anything with ‘yeast’ in the title, but after doing some research and tasting the many varieties of nutritional yeast I am now a convert! It is said to have been first used by the Egyptians as early as 1550 BC. It is usually a vegan staple since it is animal free and has a nutty cheese like taste.

1) It is a great animal free source of vitamin B12. This is a crucial vitamin for our nervous systems.

2) It is high in protein and a great source of folic acid.

3) It is gluten free.

4) It has a high mineral count.

Thank you for the great idea + nutritional yeast research – I’ve been curious about it for ages but the idea of yeast also scared me a little! As for corn popped in oil, it’s a great childhood memory and how I’ve always done it – especially fun when the pot has a clear glass lid. Will be trying Your healthy coconut oil version over the weekend. : )

Is nutritional yeast ok for those with a yeast allergy?

    • Shiva Rose says:

I think if you have an allergy it is best to stay away from any form of yeast. Thank you for checking.

Ended up making a few nights ago – couldn’t locate the Rawmesan so used Bragg’s nutritional yeast – was delish. will definitely make again. : )

Yes isn’t is so frustrating and tragic that one must be afraid of all the GMo that is circulating in our society. It makes me so sad that the world has come to this.

I agree Taru. Thank goodness for organic farmers. They are our life jackets during these turbulent seas!!
