The Incredible Health Benefits of Melon

These hot summer days can make us feel drained and limp. One of the ways I love to get a healthy bounce back in the afternoons is by making a simple, frothy cantaloupe juice. Yogi Bhajan frequently mentioned drinking or eating certain melons during the hot summers for medicinal and cleansing purposes. I know many of us may stay away from sweeter fruits because of the natural sugar content, however I feel this fear is preventing us from getting incredible benefits from certain divine fruit. I usually just consume melons, stone fruits and others separately from my meals so it can be digested on it’s own. This frothy cantaloupe drink is also great in the morning,  or even as a cocktail with some added spirits. The simple blend with ice makes this such a delightful dreamy drink.

I have a special place in my heart for cantaloupes. My grandfather who was a wonderful male role model for me growing up started each morning with a cantaloupe half sprinkled with salt and pepper. He used to say it was a cancer preventive and it turns out he was right! Cantaloupe has the one of the highest concentrations of vitamin A which is regarded as an anti-cancer vitamin. Cantaloupes which originated from Persia and India are from the musk melon family, the same group of families as cucumbers. I love the musky sweet smell of a cantaloupe in my home, and if I could bottle the beautiful unique scent I would. These days at the farmers market you can find a variety of delicious ones from France and Italy.

Cantaloupes are high in potassium, beta carotene and vitamin C and known to be soothing for the nervous stem and the cardiovascular system in the body. For this frothy drink simply scoop out spoonfuls of the melon and combine with ice and a touch of water in a powerful blender.
